Café Viggo – Our First Jakobsen!
It’s nice to know that the first café we designed in Aarhus in 1996 is still going strong. Café Viggo was named after Grocer Viggo Jorgensen, who in 1930 built one of Denmark’s first houses made from iron concrete, which also housed one of the country’s first department stores.
When Café Viggo opened in 1996, it was one of the first cafés located by the stream in Aarhus. Many doubted the success of the venture, but owners Inge and Uffe Jakobsen proved the naysayers wrong, much like Viggo Jørgensen had done before them!
Since its original design in 1996, we’ve polished the space a few times – most recently in 2007. One thing no one wants to change about Café Viggo is the fact that it’s a café! While they do serve dinner, they are not a traditional restaurant. Yes, they serve fancy drinks to the rhythm of the DJ’s music, but they are neither a bar nor a club – Café Viggo is, and always will be, a café.
The interior design is always flexible, planned and executed to transform with the café’s needs throughout the day and evening. And of course, this works only because Viggo made sure to bring in the right staff to make it all happen.
Café Viggo is located at Åboulevarden, a café and restaurant street in Aarhus, Denmark. It’s been a great pleasure designing all the cafés and restaurants Jakobsen has opened since 1996. In fact, a friend even went so far as to change the street name from Åboulevarden to ÅBønnevarden!
