Vila Can Tais – Restoring the Soul of an Ibiza House

Once you escape the uchi uchi uchi of Ibiza’s party scene, you’ll discover a breathtaking island where time is never enough.

We were asked to design a leisure house based on a traditional Ibiza home. Unfortunately, some of its original soul had already been lost—but we immediately saw its potential. By exposing the rough, textured walls behind a new window and sliding door façade, we created a sculpture of light and shadow while meeting modern insulation standards.

To honour the contrast between old and new, we kept the original structure raw and defined the rest of the house with smooth, natural surfaces—think medieval architecture meets Japanese minimalism. The devil is, of course, in the details: we framed select windows and doors with Cor-Ten steel for a distinct visual break, adding modern lighting, handles, and fixtures.
