The gap between very old and “early 1980’s old” …
Years back the company Mindworking took over the property Studsgade 27, in one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Aarhus, Denmark. We were to redesign and transform the property and the existing buildings into being the new Mindworking Domicile. So we did in 2007 …
In the process we found that the property actually included a very small piece of land with an option to build a small house, the very last one in that very old neighborhood. Obviously many before us did try to design a building for this little spot in the very center of the city, none has succeeded – until now.
It has been quite a challenge to design a building to match the old, the newer and extremely varied architecture already in the area – to be specific the neighbors to this house will on one side be a building from 1981 and on the other a house built around 1859 … no need to explain the differences.
We designed the house modern and yet contemporary, we have chosen classic high quality materials – for instance all windows, doors and even the gate to the street is made from solid oak – adding to the “human” touch of the house.
Even though the architecture is contemporary and the materials, textures and colours are classical – the different regulations about ventilation, heating, sound, fire and much more has been taken into consideration and yes all fulfilled. To combine all these complex specs we needed an engineers help – and instead of sending drawings with corrections back and forth, or uploading revised drawings to a server i.e. once a week – we have actually worked on the same “drawings” (being the same 3D file) as the engineer, at the same time, and in real-time. Thanks to our BIM server this has been absolutely “smooth sailing”, we are certain that a whole lot of mistakes, extra work, frustration, “we-thought-you-did-that” and finally costs has been avoided due to this. You could say we filled yet another gap – the one known to be between engineers and architects.
